Summer at My House

Summer is for the bugs! I know you usually hear something is for the bird’s right. Summer is for the birds if they would eat all the bugs in the 11-acre insect breeditorium I have. The first thing to pop up are the Mayflies. They do not hurt you; they just attack when you step into the grass. I think they are left from the prehistoric years. If you could put a saddle on those big bastards, you could ride them around the yard. They do not hurt you they just annoy the living piss out of you.

My Creek

Yes, It is my creek!

After the Mayflies come the deer flies. Now deer flies are some of the nastiest little bastards ever and when they bite, they draw blood. I got so sick of them one year I went and got some fly paper, took apart the roll of sticky ass paper and stapled it to an old baseball cap and wore it outside. It tickled the shit out of me to count all those fuckers stuck to that flypaper. I admit I would not have won any awards for fashion but by God, those deer flies did not bite me. We cannot roll the windows down in the car when driving down the long driveway because the deer flies attack the car. It is a bitch to see the swarm of deer flies trying to get in any window they can. They have followed us to the end of the road about 9/10th of a mile!

Let us not forget the ticks! Oh those sneaky little bastards can hide in the nastiest places, like the "hanging boys" if ya know what I mean. You look all over for them when you get home and only when the itching gets intense enough to tear the skin off do you find them. Deer ticks are so tiny and they can hide anywhere. My poor Hubs is allergic to almost every insect bite and these tiny ticks imbed between his toes! Not a pretty picture I assure you.

Then there are mosquitoes! I think everyone of you have been bothered by them but they actually form clouds on the lower forty and as much ‘Off ‘as you spray they still dive bomb like Kamikaze pilots on a mission.

Anyone from the south knows what red bugs are, but if you are like me and are from the West, you may have never heard of these minute creatures from hell. Also known as chiggers these microscopic insects latch on, insert their little feeder tubes and inject a substance that actually dissolves the tissue reminiscent of The Fly. When the skin and tissue dissolve, they suck up your precious life’s fluids. These by far are Satan’s little dogs of hell. With the other pests, at least you can see them to deal with, but these tiny little assholes are the worst!

Picture it; walking along enjoying the sights, although smelling like a chemical factory, and all of a sudden you feel a tremendous pain and then another, and still another. You look around in shock and only then do you realize you have disturbed an underground nest of Yellow Jackets. No amount of spray will protect you from the intense sting of these buggers. Run as fast as you can and jump into the water because they are pissed and they will not let you get away from disturbing their happy home.

The one thing that we have on our acreage that does not bother me in the least are snakes. Snakes have their purpose, the afore mentioned denizens of hell do NOT. Snakes keep the rats and mice from invading my home so they are okay. Well, except for the Copperheads, and Water Moccasins AKA Cottonmouth. Those I kill, although I must confess I have yet to see a Cottonmouth. To hear the people out here tell it there are Cottonmouths swarming everywhere, because everyone swears they kill at least ten a week. I have a very large creek on my property with every kind of wildlife you can imagine and have yet to see a Cottonmouth. Most water snakes are really harmless but are killed out of ignorance.  We have King snakes also and if I could keep my dog Lucky/Dummy from eating them I would be happy.

Besides all these wonderful creatures I share my home with are the Bob Cat’s and the black bears. The bears live across the creek and I have actually seen one of them and a friend who lives behind the creek has several pictures of the bears eating his corn. The Bob Cat we have seen on a tree that had fallen in the creek. Come to think of it, I am missing two of my cats. I wonder……..

This concludes my tour of my lovely home in the woods. Sounds terrible but I would not trade it for anything.

I don't know, you are starting to make me feel very grateful for the intense high and dry heat of the AZ desert.

Although we have scorpions.

I'm thinkin' I'll just stay indoors, because OUTDOORS ARE FOR THE BUGS!

hee hee

Skye July 7, 2009 4:29 PM

No Etta, your place doesn't sound horrible, in fact, as far as I'm concerned, it sounds incredibly lovely! Yeah, sure, you have all those bugs to contend with, but that's bugs, no big deal. You have all those snakes, I loooooove snakes! We have a few around here as well, nothing poisonous though. And the Bob Cat's, oh my how lovely! Cougar here, haven't seen one lately, but I have followed the tracks on occasion.

Your pics are all so lovely, thanks for giving us a tour!

Sandee July 7, 2009 5:21 PM

Yep, there's lots of critters out there that make you crazy. I'm with you though. I wouldn't trade it for anything either.

Have a terrific day. :)

Jane Doe July 7, 2009 6:19 PM

Your land is absolutely beautiful, but man, those bugs. YUCK! And the snakes, I can't even look at the pics, I just scrolled right past those. I hate snakes!

I'm very into nature and all that, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm a passionate tree-hugger, but I'm glad the nature near where I live comes with bike paths and helicopters that spray for mosquitoes. The snakes don't come up onto the bike path and the bugs aren't quite as bad there either.

Have a great day!

Jane

We have the same bugs waaaaay up here too, except for those chiggers. I think. Never seen/felt one...yet. Those friggin' deer flies should be shot. I've come in to discover blood running down my face after getting bitten by one of those suckers. In MA there are horseflies that hang out in dune grass. Picture deer flies on steroids. We don't have your snakes, thank Buddha.

ReformingGeek July 7, 2009 9:36 PM

So you are discouraging visitors?

Good job. ;-)

We don't have the biting flies, thanks goodness. Mosquitoes? Yes. Chiggers? Yes. Snakes? Yes. Ticks? Occasionally. Bear? Nope.

11 acres sounds nice, though!

FishHawk July 8, 2009 1:36 AM

An excellent post, my dear.

Nooter July 8, 2009 11:05 AM

you should design a line of beauty wear made entirely of flypaper, then sell it on ebay

also, to get rid of all the bugs simply put up a sign near the creek that says 'spider convention here next week'

also also, mmm... snakes... tastes like chicken

also also also, do you live in the zoo by any chance?

ettarose July 8, 2009 1:07 PM

Quirky, I miss the Arizona kind of bugs. The whole time I lived there I never saw any scorpions, rattlesnakes yes, scorpions no.

Skye, you are right, it really is lovely. In the spring we are almost bug free and that is when nature explodes here. I have a few pictures at the bottom of my blog. Snakes are the coolest thing ever! I love them. Like I said the only ones I kill are the copperheads. This time of year bites from them are extremely common.

Sandee, I can handle most of the wildlife, but none of the bugs. Have a great day!

Jane Doe, I am so glad you stopped by.Snakes are a very misunderstood creature. Most people think they're slimy when in reality their skin is very cool and dry. Snakes also will slither the other way most of the time. I have a bike path on the creek bank, just snakes use it too.
Deb, chiggers are the epitome of hell! When I first moved here I had no knowledge of them and went blackberry picking. I ended up with over a thousand bites on me from under my arms down to my ankles. They continue to itch for about two weeks. Oh we have the horse flies here too, they just are not as prevalent as the deer flies.

RG, aren't chiggers the worst? Visitors, discourage? Never, I have enough room I could open a campground. Just fair warning to those who wish to camp.

FishHawk, I am glad you enjoyed my tour. Come back any time.

Nooter, I would bet you would love it here. Lucky has the entire creek to himself and loves to try to catch minnows. I'll bet he would even share a snake or two with you. Yes, sometimes it does feel like I live in the zoo.

Don July 8, 2009 3:00 PM

Well, I don't have the black bear, but I have everything else. Deer fly are my most hated. Yellow Jackets my most feared and Mayflies without a doubt are the ones that piss me off the most. I can relate.

Relax Max July 8, 2009 10:05 PM

This post really bugs me.

Relax Max July 8, 2009 10:13 PM

Up a crick with no paddle.

Is that really shit crick you're up?

Sure is beautiful Suzy Q.

Lucky. Dummie. Make up your damn mind. Which is he? Damn sure ain't Lucky to live with all them bugs and snakes.

Ain't no scorpions in Arizona. That's a damnable lie. Plenty of hookers though. I was going to say, "Even after you left" but that was to mean even for me.

Donna July 8, 2009 10:37 PM

I know about those chiggers/redbugs.They put a bite on you like those fireants. Yeah know about the deer flies too!OUCH!There are also the beach flies and these big ass horse flies. Now they hurt. I'd rather be in labor again than have one of them bite me again. But anyway I'm with you. I would'nt want anything less. Sound like a very peaceful place. Where do you live. I'm in Greenville N.C.

dana July 9, 2009 11:30 PM

You should have your daughter out for a picnic. One of those old fashioned, sit on the blanket in the middle of the grass, close to the creek, kind of picnics....close to trees....around 8pm.....

The Queen July 9, 2009 11:31 PM

nOTHING HURTS LIKE A deer fly bite... and grass fleas suck.. do you have those? We have those here at the new house in Kansas.. they suck..

Joel Klebanoff July 10, 2009 4:43 PM

See, that is why I'm a devoted city-dweller. We don't allow critters like that in the city -- unless you count people wearing aluminum foil hats, incessantly babbling out loud to their invisible friends and occasionally shouting about Jesus.

ettarose July 11, 2009 12:52 AM

Don, I have to agree about the damned deer fly. Yellow Jackets I fear because they nest under ground and until you have mowed over the hive you don't know they are there.
Max, something about it bugs me too. I will be posting some very good pictures soon. I am proud of my little house in the woods. It is Dummie when he is at the creek because he acts so stupid he is funny. The littlest one named him Lucky.Since when did you care about being mean?

Donna, I agree I would not trade it for anything. I live in Bullock.

Dana, when she lived here you could not get her to go to the creek. Oh yuck! she would say. Good idea though.

Queen I am not sure about the fleas. I do know if you walk out in the grass your ankles get chewed up.

Joel, I used to be a city dweller but I would take the bugs over gangs and violence any day.

Venom July 11, 2009 10:50 AM

Etta, great post clearly outlining the bug problem of country life. I wouldn't move into town either though - people often piss me off even more than bugs. We don't have red flies here, horseflies are more populous than deer flies, but ticks we have aplenty. Gak.

Laughed like hell @ the fly paper hat, heeheehee.

CatLadyLarew July 13, 2009 9:51 AM

Now THAT makes me want to get out and enjoy nature! Mind if I stop by?
